Abstract
GIS teaching material is a component of geography education that needs to be considered at this time. Geographic information systems have a relationship with spatial thinking, the link is an increase in the ability of spatial thinking through GIS learning. However, most of the material has been developed without containing a lot of components of spatial thinking. This study aims to develop GIS teaching materials based on spatial thinking. Spatial thinking is used as a basis for developing material using spatial concepts in explaining GIS theory and applications, using representation tools, and using reasoning processes. This study uses a research and development (R&D) approach that is designed using the ADDIE model which consists of five stages, namely analyze, design, develop, implement, and evaluate. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics. The results showed that teaching materials that had been developed were effectively used in GIS learning in geography education majors. Thus, geography education students are prepared to become geography teachers in schools that can teach GIS, so that GIS development is not only in universities but also develops in schools. Therefore it is recommended to stakeholders, such as lecturers, writers, and researchers to develop teaching materials using a conceptual model based on spatial thinking.
